Culture is a joint project of the Tennessee Historical Society
and the University of Tennessee Press. This fully searchable version
of the print edition, originally published in 1998, contains over
1,500 entries. The online version has updates to existing entries,
new entries, more than five hundred additional images, plus audio
and video files.
This site is designed to supply general information about the state
of Tennessee in a user-friendly format for students, teachers, researchers,
and general information seekers. It is best viewed with Netscape
4.7 or later and Internet Explorer 5.0 or later. Certain elements
of this website require a Flash plug-in which can be obtained from
Macromedia's website.
The video and audio files are in Real Player format which can be
downloaded free from the Real One
website.
For permission to use passages or images in the on-line edition,
please contact the Tennessee Historical Society. To make suggestions
for additional entries for future editions or to report factual

or the University of Tennessee Press.
Periodic updates to the material are scheduled; the editorial committee
will meet periodically to discuss changes and updates to the on-line
edition.
Development work on the present edition is ongoing with the goal
being to enhance the visual and functional elements of this resource.
As we move forward to full implementation of this on-line project,
we hope you enjoy your visit to the Tennessee Encyclopedia.
