Methodist Health Care, Memphis

Tennessee’s eighth largest private employer, with 7,900 workers in the Memphis area and West Tennessee, Methodist Health Care, Memphis, is headquartered on Union Avenue in downtown Memphis. Founded by John M. Sherard in 1918, the Methodist Hospital in Memphis has grown into Methodist Healthcare-Memphis Hospitals, the third largest not-for-profit hospital in the nation. The Memphis, Mississippi, and North Arkansas conferences of the United Methodist Church support this thirteen-hospital institution, which is governed by a church-appointed board of trustees. In 2000, Modern Healthcare magazine ranked Methodist Health Care, Memphis, as one of the top integrated healthcare networks in the nation.
